FWB Announces CD-ROM ToolKit
- Utility Increases CD-ROM Performance up to 1,800% -
San Francisco, CA - October 15, 1992
FWB, Inc. of San Francisco, CA today announced a new Macintosh utility, CD-ROM
ToolKit™, that works in the background to make CD-ROM drives perform faster and
more reliably. The $79.95 (SRP) package will ship in December. CD-ROM ToolKit
uses advanced caching techniques to improve CD-ROM performance as much as
1,800%. By caching and prefetching repeatedly used information to a hard drive
and RAM, CD-ROM ToolKit allows searches and seeks to take place almost
instantaneously, dramatically improving drive operation and user productivity.
CD-ROM ToolKit also includes a robust device driver that delivers reliable
support for most popular CD-ROM drives, and an audio control desk accessory for
improved management of audio playback. Unlike most current drivers, CD-ROM
ToolKit fully supports all of Apple’s multimedia standards.
“CD-ROM ToolKit makes using CD-ROM drives more productive and enjoyable”,
according to Steve Goodman, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at FWB.
“Unlike other utilities, CD-ROM ToolKit operates transparently and is
completely configurable. Users can allocate additional hard disk space or
available RAM to the caching for even faster performance.”
CD-ROM ToolKit’s high performance device driver allows any CD-ROM drive to read
Kodak’s new PhotoCD disc format. FWB’s universal software provides unique
support for Apple HFS, High Sierra, ISO 9660, PhotoCD, ProDOS and MS-DOS discs.
CD-ROM ToolKit includes “custom-tuned” support for all popular drives from
Toshiba, Sony, Chinon, Pioneer, Apple, NEC, Phillips, plus multi-speed,
multi-session and multi-platter devices.
Customers report that “find file” operations that took 28 seconds before
acceleration, take only 1.1 seconds after installing CD-ROM ToolKit. Opening
all folders on the “World Fact Book” disc, from Wayzata, takes 38 seconds
without acceleration, and less than 14 seconds after accelerating the same
disc.
CD-ROM ToolKit’s convenient Desk Accessory allows any drive equipped with audio
output jacks to play audio CDs with complete playback control, including
advanced features such as fast forward, shuffle and programmable playback
order.
CD-ROM ToolKit joins FWB’s highly acclaimed Hard Disk ToolKit™ and its
best-selling, entry-level version, Hard Disk ToolKit•Personal Edition™, to
round out the company’s family of SCSI management software. CD-ROM ToolKit will
be available wherever Macintosh software is sold.
